There were concerning signs for Jannik Sinner, who was fighting hard during his fourth-round clash with Holger Rune at the Australian Open on Monday (January 20). He was struggling to breathe, probably suffered from heat, and even was seen shaking.

Sinner, the defending champion, claimed the first set and lost the next. And when he was 2-1 in the third set, he was seen trembling on the bench with a towel over his face.

Former player Jim Courier, who was doing commentary for Channel 9, the official broadcaster for the Australian Open, said Sinner was struggling to even hold the towel. Courier later said that Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill told him that the 23-year-old ‘didn’t wake up feeling right’.

This is a guy who has almost forgotten what it feels like to lose. He’s in real, serious trouble here. Tremors- this is really worrying. He has the ice towel that he is holding but he can barely hold it. His right hand, his playing hand, is all over the place.

Jim Courier said on Channel 9

When he was at 3-2 in the third set, he took an 11-minute medical timeout during which he left the court for the locker room. The treatment he got there probably eased his problems as he won the third set after returning.

This morning was a very strange morning because I didn’t even warm up today. I was trying to go on court as fit as I could. I knew in my mind already before the match that I would struggle today. I have to say that game wise I played well today. I served very well. Quality shots which then gave me the confidence to fight on. It was for sure very, very tough.

Jannik Sinner said during his on-court interview

Sinner will be facing either Alex de Minaur or Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals which he reached for the third time at Melbourne Park. The two-time Grand Slam champion defeated the Australian nine times in their nine meetings and also holds a 2-0 head-to-head record over the 20-year-old American.
