There’s no hiding the fact that the NBA, as a business product, is suffering due to a lack of viewership. Fans and analysts alike are always reminiscing about the “good old days” of basketball, when the game was more physical and highly competitive. However, former NBA champion Kevin Garnett believes that maybe it’s time to start celebrating and cherishing the “New NBA.”

On the latest episode of KG Certified, Garnett sat down with former teammate, Tony Allen and co-host Paul Peirce. During an almost hour-long conversation, the former Boston Celtics players touched on myriads of trending topics like OKC vs CLE battle to Zion Willamson‘s future. However, he went off the rails once the subject of 40-year-old LeBron James insane mid-air hand switch poster-dunk on Mav’s big man Dereck Lively.

“We’ve been taught to see the game through this lens and there’s a new lens up. We keep looking through it the way. LeBron James, 40 years old. He banged on a n**ga. He banged on a n**ga at 40. We can’t say that s*it wasn’t dope. Fu*k outta here. Get the f*ck out of here. Are you f*cking serious? That n**ga banged on a n*ga at 40.”

Garnett went on further to say that, as basketball fans, we have been taught to look back instead of forward. Using anomalies like Victor Wembanyama as an example, he urged fans and media “old heads” to stop disseminating their disappointment with the way today’s game is played and instead start appreciating it.

The Hall of Famer was referring to the ongoing public verbal spat between Charles Barkley and Lakers head coach J.J. Redick. He suggested that it’s time to start looking at the NBA through a new lens. Garnett acknowledged the NBA’s constant grappling with load management and excessive three-point shooting yet appealed for “glorifying the game” instead of barraging it.

Kevin Garnett’s newfound appreciation for LeBron James

Fans remember vividly when KG and the rest of the Boston Celtics squad were a significant roadblock for the LeBron James, particularly from 2007 to 2013 in the Eastern Conference playoffs. However, times have changed since then. The NBA community is relishing Garnett’s brand-new respect for King James, as he frequently jumps to his defense. Last year, Kevin Garnett even told Stephen A. Smith that James is “his GOAT.”

“He’s my GOAT of all of this. The business, the everything. He’s the vision of what every black man should aspire for, has been a billionaire, having your own labels, like he’s set the tone. I played against bro, it ain’t personal anymore. I’m watching as a fan and I’m giving him flowers and I’m looking at it from a different perspective of things that I’ve never seen in the game. We ain’t never seen a 39-year-old like this.” – Kevin Garnet on LeBron James

This isn’t the first time KG has had high praise for LeBron James or gone off on media and fans for not treasuring the game. The ex-champion previously called out “spoiled fans” for not appreciating aliens like Giannis Antetokounmpo and James. He also lauded King for his efforts to get his son drafted into the league as a Laker.

In his 22nd year with the NBA, LeBron James is averaging 23.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game. Currently, the Lakers sit in 6th place in the Western Conference with a 20-16 record. As of now, all of the Los Angeles home games have been postponed so far due to the ongoing California wildfire catastrophe.
