Italy have shown that they do not need Jannik Sinner for Davis Cup heroics as Matteo Berrettini does the job.

Defending champions Italy, who had already secured a spot in the Davis Cup finals in Malaga thanks to Brazil’s unexpected 2-0 victory over Belgium, took the lead against the Netherlands without the help of Jannik Sinner on Sunday (September 15). Matteo Berrettini won his match against Botic van de Zandschulp in three sets, with scores of 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

After winning the match, Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, was seen doing the ‘Sinner’ celebration of standing still after an epic point. Sinner performed that celebration recently after the quarterfinal win at the US Open against Daniil Medvedev.

The initiation of this celebration came during Sinner’s memorable Australian Open campaign. The Italian played a roller-coaster final against Medvedev, coming back from two sets down to win his first Grand Slam title. After winning the third set to reduce the deficit, Sinner did the ‘ice cold’ celebration for the first time.

Berrettini was the poster boy of Italian tennis for quite some time before Sinner took charge. However, he hopes that he can be influential in helping Italy defend the Davis Cup crown this year.

A familiar face was spotted in the stands during Italy’s Davis Cup Group Stage match against the Netherlands on Sunday. Jannik Sinner, the recent US Open champion, was in Bologna to support his team as they played their final group-stage match.

Italy, the defending champions, secured their spot in the Final 8 in Malaga after Brazil won their tie against Belgium. Even though the top-ranked player was missing, Italy won both of their matches against Belgium and Brazil, thanks to two singles wins by Matteo Berrettini.

Sinner’s most recent match was his 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 win in the US Open final against Taylor Fritz. This victory gave him his second major title, following his first Grand Slam win at the Australian Open in January, earlier this year.

Last year, Sinner played a key role in Italy’s second Davis Cup title. He saved three match points in the semi-finals against Novak Djokovic and later teamed up with Lorenzo Sonego to win the decisive doubles match. Sinner has had a staggering year, with a 55-5 record and six Tour titles.
