The Minnesota Vikings aren’t just pursuing a win against the Los Angeles Rams this week. The Vikings are reportedly eyeing their opponent’s quarterback Matthew Stafford as well.

The idea, initially floated by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk two weeks ago, seemingly gained traction in the following weeks. Florio noted that Stafford is in his last year in Los Angeles, whether the Rams stage a comeback or not. Recent reports from non-traditional media outlets have suggested that serious talks have been held concerning this matter.

Kevin O’Connell, the current head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, has previously won his first Super Bowl with Matthew Stafford at the Rams. O’Connell, often referred to as KOC, played a huge role in shaping the Rams’ offense with a 12-5 regular season record and postseason success as well. He remains one of the youngest and loved coaches in the league.

The Vikings are currently second in the NFC North with five wins and a loss through Week 7. The Vikings are a key title contender after their explosive performances as the tournament closes in on the halfway mark.

The most important question apart from the obvious Darnold disrespect is whether the Vikings want Stafford. They recently moved on from an aging quarterback with a large contract Kirk Cousins. Stafford is 36 years old and the Vikings will need to free up a lot of space to navigate this trade. Granted, Darnold is signed for one year, but they also have a young quarterback in JJ McCarthy as well.

Sam Darnold, Vikings current starting quarterback, has been almost exceptional taking over injured rookie JJ McCarthy. Darnold has posted a completion rate of 66.5 while passing for 1370 yards while tossing 12 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

He is ranked eleventh in best completion rates in 2024 amongst the players with more than 1300 pass yards. The 27-year-old is also tied for fifth place with Josh Allen for most touchdowns.

Social Media is the main propagator of the Stafford to Vikings rumor. At the same time, they are also calling the deal unreasonable and a disrespect to their current quarterback.

Some fans also ascertained that maybe the deal includes Darnold moving to the Rams.

Albeit all these, fans are also hesitant to take the news as solid, calling out the sources.
