Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma start campaign to raise funds; donate Rs. 2 crore for COVID-19 relief

Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and wife Anushka Sharma have started a campaign on the crowd-funding platform Ketto to raise funds for tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple took to Twitter today to announce the news, releasing a video where they stated that they were pained by the country suffering. To start the donations off, they contributed a sum of Rs. 2 crore for the cause as well.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been wreaking havoc in India with more than 4 lakh cases per day being reported. There is a constant state of panic and uncertainty over each and every aspect of life and there are various acute problems facing the country like the shortage of oxygen and unavailability of beds for treatment. At this juncture, a plethora of celebrities and sportspersons have come forward to contribute funds.

During the Indian Premier League (IPL), donations were started off by Australian pacer Pat Cummins who donated USD 50,000. Soon, commentator Brett Lee joined him. There were then a large amount of players who also contributed for the cause.

Virat Kohli took to Twitter today to announce the start of the campaign writing, “Anushka and I have started a campaign on @ketto, to raise funds for Covid-19 relief, and we would be grateful for your support. Let’s all come together and help those around us in need of our support. I urge you all to join our movement.”

Anushka Sharma wrote, “As our country battles the second wave of Covid-19, and our healthcare systems are facing extreme challenges, it breaks my heart to see our people suffering. So, Virat and I have initiated a campaign #InThisTogether, with Ketto, to raise funds for Covid-19 relief.”

In the video, the two say, “Things have been very tough for India as we fight the pandemic. It really pains us to see our country suffer like this. We are grateful to all people who fight day and night for our sake. Their dedication is appreciated. Anushka and I have started a fundraise on ketto. We request you all to join the imitative and donate. Every little bit makes a difference. We will overcome this together, if we are in it together. Stay Safe. Jai Hind.”
