Indian cricket stalwart Virat Kohli’s ‘goodbye’ gesture towards fans present in the Adelaide Oval has left fans worried, amid retirement buzz. The 36-year-old waved at the crowd, after getting dismissed for a second consecutive duck in the 2nd ODI against Australia.
Virat Kohli‘s performance against Australia since his return to the Team India squad after a seven-month hiatus has been underwhelming. This three-match ODI series against Australia marks the veteran icon’s comeback to the national team; his last appearance was in the 2025 Champions Trophy final in March. Following the team’s triumph, Kohli had also surprised fans by announcing his retirement from Tests.
Kohli has faced intense scrutiny since his return, as he is yet to add to his massive 50-over tally of 14,181 runs in the two opening matches against Australia. In fact, the 36-year-old has not even opened his run-scoring account in the series so far, having been dismissed for ducks in the first two matches against the Aussies. He was first dismissed for an eight-ball duck in Perth, followed by a four-ball duck in Adelaide.
This also marks a historic first for Kohli, as he has never before been dismissed for two consecutive ducks in his ODI career. At the Adelaide Oval, a ground where the veteran Indian batter boasts 975 runs across all the three formats, he fell to a brilliant delivery from Australian fast bowler Xavier Bartlett. He was caught off guard by an inswinger that struck his pads in line with the stumps, with the DRS review confirming an out for leg-before wicket.
Once Kohli was declared out, the Adelaide crowd fell into silence, as it could be his last outing at the venue. While he walked back to the dressing room, fans gave the Indian icon a standing ovation, to which Kohli acknowledged by raising his gloves as he crossed the boundary rope. Kohli’s gesture, which appeared to be more of a farewell than a mere acknowledgement, has left his fans worried.

Notwithstanding the rumors and speculation, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra suggested that Kohli’s gesture was simply an emotional tribute to the Adelaide Oval. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Virat Kohli, as he aims to secure his place in the team until the 2027 World Cup.

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli’s reaction to a standing ovation from fans at the Adelaide Oval despite getting dismissed for a duck, has set social media ablaze. The RCB icon raised his bat to acknowledge the crowd support, an act that has been perceived as a retirement gesture.

Fans suggested that Virat Kohli might be contemplating ODI retirement, after having already announced an end to his Test and T20I career. Some other fans pointed to his disappointing match performance, even reminiscing the phrase that a player should leave cricket, before cricket leaves him. One fan suggested that it is the perfect time for the veteran batting stalwart to call time on his career, with his performance having gone down due to the lack of match practice. Another fan thanked Kohli for the memories that he provided the fans with.
From those gritty hundreds in both innings in his first test match as captain to this inning of 3 ball duck, both Virat Kohli and Indian Cricket have come a long way. I hope you'll find a way back but if you haven't then thanks for all the beautiful memories.#INDvAUS
