England Test skipper Joe Root hails Virat Kohli as the most complete batsman among the “Fab Four.” Root picked his Indian counterpart ahead of the likes of Kane Williamson and Steve Smith. And one reason for it might Kohli’s average, which is 50 plus in all three formats, a formidable feat in its own. With him at the helm of things for India, Kohli has only improved.
The Indian skipper’s ability to chase any target down in white-ball cricket has impressed Root. He is in awe of the way Kohli paces his innings in the second innings and sees his side through more often than not.
“Virat is probably the most complete player out of the three of them across formats,” Root was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
“His ability to chase things down in the limited-overs format and to pace it as well as he does as often as he does and be not out at the end is extraordinary,” he added.
Virat has got an all-round game: Root
The 29-year-old points out that Kohli’s all-around game leaves very limited options for his opponents and that has been his greatest strength. The way Kohli played in his first England tour as captain, especially after his disastrous 2014 tour of England impressed the Englishman.
“He’s got a very good all-round game but you wouldn’t say he’s weaker against spin or pace,” Root said.
“He obviously struggled on his first tour to England, but he scored really heavily when he came back. And similarly, elsewhere in the world, he’s put in massive performances. All that with the weight of India on his shoulders, as well,” Root concluded.
