Sports is a form of entertainment that has brought people together on many occasions. The importance of fans at sporting events was clearly felt when action took place behind closed doors during the COVID-19 pandemic time. Fortunately, spectators can once again fill the stadiums and cheer on their beloved teams. On Wednesday, a volleyball game in Nebraska broke the women’s attendance record for any sport.

While Nebraska is known as the capital of volleyball, no one would see this coming. The fans were in a boisterous mood as they lined in for the game. The match took place at the Lincoln Memorial Stadium as the Cornhuskers hosted the Omaha Mavericks. This event turned out to be a historic one as 92,003 fans packed in to watch an NCAA game between two college teams.

With such a huge crowd rallying behind them, it was no strange to see the Huskers destroy their opponents. They won all three sets to win the game 3-0. However, the focus of the night was on the record-breaking attendance set. This milestone moment laid a mark on women’s sports signaling their rise in today’s time.

This is unbelievable for women’s athletics. To do this in Nebraska, we dreamed big tonight, we really dreamed big,” Huskers coach John Cook said after the game. Meanwhile, freshman Andi Jackson labeled the event as “incredible” and that she had no words to describe the surreal feeling.

There is a very famous saying that states “Records are made to be broken”. Whether it is any individual or a team feat, there is always one occasion where that record gets broken. On Wednesday night, the record for the highest attendance in women’s sports was broken as 92,003 spectators gathered around to watch a game of volleyball in Nebraska.

The previous record for the highest attendance in women’s sports belonged to football (soccer). A large crowd of 91,468 was present at the historic Camp Nou during the UEFA Women’s Champions League game between Barcelona and Wolfsburg. This happened in 2022 when they surpassed their own record to beat their traveling opponents 5-1 in the first leg of the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, the previous crowd record for an NCAA volleyball match also belongs to Nebraska. An audience of 18,755 was present when they played Wisconsin in December 2021. The Huskers would go on to absolutely demolish this record on Wednesday, setting a new path for volleyball and women’s sports along the process.
