The main event of UFC Vegas 54 was headlined by the light heavyweight contest between Jan Blachowicz (28-9 MMA, 11-6 UFC) and Aleksandar Rakic (14-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC.) These two are two of the best light heavyweights on the planet, and they were fighting for the spot of number one contender.

Rakic has been on an absolute tear throughout his UFC career, and he was calling out for top-level contenders for a long time. This was a perfect opportunity to put his name in the title contention, and he fought accordingly.

Jan is a former champ, and he lost his belt to Glover Teixeira in his last fight, he wanted to climb his way back to the top before fighting for the title again, and he wants to avenge his loss against Glover Teixeira.

Round 1- They started trading punches as soon as the fight started, Rakic was trying to feel his opponent out, and he was throwing some heavy leg kicks. Jan did a good job of checking them, and it forced Rakic to trade punches with him. A short hook from Rakic opened up a cut below Jan’s eye, but he fought a great round and landed some big punches to get his opponent’s attention.

Round 2 – Rakic was looking for the takedowns and he forced Jan to fight on his heels with his excellent footwork. He came in with a 1-2 combination, and that got the required reaction from Jan. Rakic grabbed Jan’s leg, and landed a big takedown. He started chipping away with his elbows, and the pressure from the top stopped Jan from getting away. Rakic finished the round on top.

Round 3 – Rakic has all the momentum coming into the 3rd round, he popped a few good jabs, and it stumbled Jan’s mouthguard. The ref stepped in and Jan readjusted his guard. Jan landed a leg kick, and just as Rakic was moving back his other knee bucked and he crumbled to the ground. The fight was stopped, and Jan was declared the winner.
