The NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway saw Hendrick Motorsport driver William Byron win the race with relative ease in overtime. While majority of the race was under green flag, the race featured few unusual incidents. This includes a pit-lane incident between Chase Elliot and 2023 Daytona 500 winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
During stage one of the race, on lap 86 Chase Elliot pitted, and coincidently during his exit Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was trying to enter his pit box. The No:9 Chevy Camero ZL1 hit the No:47 Chevy and spun him. This made Stenhouse enter his pit box drifting and facing the opposite direction of the exit. Fortunately, no incident involving the JTDGR crew occurred due to the spin, but if Stenhouse was a bit more fast entering the box, there was possibility of the car hitting a crew member.
This incident that was caused by Elliot was big factor that ruined the No: 47’s race as the driver’s Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 had to be serviced backwards in the pit stall. Moreover, Ricky Stenhouse was also penalized due to speeding in the pit road which hampered his race even more and ended with the driver finishing in P29.
Martinsville also saw a pit-lane incident between Ty Gibbs and Kyle Busch
Another pit-lane collision, incident that happened on lap 186 during at Martinsville Speedway. It was between Joe Gibbs Racing driver Ty Gibbs and Richard Childress Racing driver Kyle Busch. The collision between the two drivers happened when the Joe Gibbs Racing driver performed a hard left inside the pit road.
Overall, both the drivers’ races got ruined after this contact as Busch finished in P16 and Gibbs ended up even worse in P19. What makes the incident ironic is the fact that, Gibbs was the driver that replaced Busch at JGR, when he moved to Rihard Childress’ team.
While the final finish was poor for Gibbs, it won’t affect him as much as it will affect his veteran rival. The No:54 driver has been in fine form recently and with the fast cars JGR is fielding it won’t be hard for him to bounce back. At the same time Busch has been straggling to produce a one good finish in the short tracks with the No:8 team and the Martinsville result is another disappointment being added to the list.
