After spending most of last season on the injury list, Victor Wembanyama came back this season with the sole view of leading his San Antonio Spurs to become a playoff regular.

The franchise sure played its part, as they drafted well and signed good complementary players to exploit their young core. The result of that has seen the team soar from being good enough to be a play-in candidate to 2nd in the Western Conference.

In the 7′ 4″ center’s first game back from injury, he came off the bench to help defeat the league-leading Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Cup semifinals.

Earlier, the two sides met again, and Victor Wembanyama has continued his trend of coming off the bench, as they try to continue the rhythm they found when their most important superstar was out injured.

That game plan worked well again, with the Spurs clamping down on the reigning champions in the fourth quarter, while outscoring them by 20 points to win their second straight game against OKC.

After the game, the excitement among the players and fans was evident. To add to the celebrations, Wemby and his teammates gathered in the middle of the court and asked their fans to perform the ‘Thunder Clap.’

The 21-year-old led them by beating a big drum, and increased the frequency of each double beat until it reached a unanimous and harmonious clap. Every single fan had a wide smile on their face as they felt the team was about to do something in the league.

Victor Wembanyama hopes Spurs/OKC become a rivalry

After successfully initiating a new tradition, Victor Wembanyama made his way to the media room, where reporters asked him if this second straight win against the league’s best team signals the start of a new rivalry.

I hope it will be soon, but we’re definitely getting closer.

Victor Wembanyama replied

The Frenchman reiterated that when he first said that it was not a rivalry, after their NBA Cup semifinal win, he did not imply that it was impossible that it would ever be one.

Now, he believes that his San Antonio Spurs are getting closer to becoming a serious threat to the Thunder’s throne, and once they reach where they want to be, this could become a rivalry that could last quite a while.

The Oklahoma City-based franchise does not have a legitimate rivalry, unless one considers their last year’s opponents in the NBA Finals, the Indiana Pacers, as one.

Therefore, the emergence of this Spurs team could finally make this a small-market team rivalry that basketball fans could enjoy in the foreseeable future.

Rashad McCants believes OKC is being exposed

Before Victor Wembanyama and his Spurs defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder for the second straight time, Anthony Edwards and his Timberwolves won their last game against the champions even without their head coach, who was ejected in the first quarter.

Their identity has been exposed… Y’all are outplaying guys by fouling and hacking, and the refs are allowing y’all to do certain things… If the refs don’t call them, they lose.

Rashad McCants said on Gil’s Arena

The former NBA star makes a valid point, as all three of OKC’s last three losses have come when officials handed their opponents more free throws than them.

Rashad McCants believes that once opponents truly figure out how to avoid giving away the easy fouls OKC are accustomed to getting, the tide will change, and they will not be as dominant as they look.

He claims the Thunder does not have a game plan that does not involve hacking and fouling, while baiting opponents into fouls all the time. Now, Victor Wembanyama and his Spurs literally proved McCants’ point.
