The Thomas Cup 2022 has already been historic for India, as the men’s team managed to qualify for the finals after a 7 decade wait. The young Indian men’s team had quite the showing, plowing past Denmark and Malaysia to make their first ever finals of the event.

The first match was a crucial one of World no. 9 Lakshya Sen and World No. 5 Anthony Ginting, and it was expected to be a tough one. Sen gave a tough fight to Ginting who got quite flustered and began to show cracks in his game. It was Sen in the end, who reigned supreme in the impressive comeback to win the match 8-21, 21-17, 21-16. This send India into an early 1-0 lead.

The next match was another big game, and the Indian pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were up against the formidable pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo. It was sure that neither pair would go down without a fight, and the audience was in for an entertaining match. An incredible comeback saw the Indians get the win 18-21, 23-21, 21-19- giving India now a 2-0 lead.

The last match was that of Kidambi Srikanth against Jonathan Christie, with the latter having a 5-4 win record over the Indian. The first set was a dominant win by Srikanth, as he took the set 21-15. The second set was quite the nerve wracking one, as the match went back and forth between the two players. Ultimately Srikanth bagged the game for the Indians, finishing the game and the championship in the second set with 23-21.

Thus, the Indian team took the victory over Indonesia with a straight 3-0 score, to lift the Thomas Cup for the very first time. An emphatic victory and a well deserved win for India, as the Indian men’s badminton team showed the world that they are a force to be reckoned with.
