‘We had a very clear idea,’ Jannik Sinner’s ex-coach looks back on the eight-year collaboration with the Italian
Riccardio Piatti was the coach of Jannik Sinner for eight years before his resurgence in 2023, where he won the Davis Cup for Italy.

Riccardo Piatti, Jannik Sinner‘s former coach, has looked back on the long period he spent with the current World No. 1. Piatti was fundamental to Sinner’s initial success, helping him win the 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals.
Piatti believes that Sinner’s potential was tremendous. In fact, he even claimed that the 23-year-old would enter the top 10 after playing 150 professional matches.
We had a very clear idea of what to do. In 2021, he was ranked 9th in the world, but I still explained to him that during this period, it didn’t matter if he made a lot of mistakes because in every match he lost, the important thing would be not to lose in the same way again. That was part of his education. When he started playing on the main circuit I told him that after 150 matches he would be in the Top 10, and he was number 9 in Vienna after 139 matches. And then I told him that it took another 100 matches to win a Grand Slam title. And then, of course, he won. He always had the potential to do it.

Sinner’s time with Piatti ended in February 2022 when Piatti got involved with tennis schools and college programs. He was replaced by Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi as part of Sinner’s team.
Since then, Sinner has only improved, winning the Davis Cup for Italy in 2023 and rising to the top of the world rankings in June last year. Currently, he has won three Grand Slam titles and holds the Australian Open and US Open crowns.
Jannik Sinner snubbed for a recognizable award
Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka have been nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards. The news comes shortly after Jannik Sinner was taken off the list of contenders. The Laureus Awards are very prestigious in sports and will celebrate their 25th anniversary in Madrid on April 21st.

Alcaraz, who has won four Grand Slam titles, is in the running for the Sportsman of the Year award. Sabalenka, the current WTA world No. 1, is nominated for the Sportswoman of the Year award. Both will compete against other top athletes for these honors.
One big name missing is Jannik Sinner. He won two Grand Slam titles in 2024 and finished the year as world No. 1. Despite his achievements, he will not be part of the awards.
Laureus announced last week that Sinner was removed from the shortlist. The reason was his three-month doping ban. If Alcaraz, Sabalenka, or Oda win, they will join other famous tennis players who have won Laureus Awards.
