Umesh Yadav gives first breakthrough by dismissing Najmul Hossain Shanto

Chasing a massive 513-run target, Bangladeshi openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zahir Hasan stitched an incredible 124-run stand in their second innings, on Day 4 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh at Chattogram on Saturday (December 17). India fast bowler Umesh Yadav drew the first blood by dismissing Shanto, to break the stand.

In the 47th over, Umesh delivered a length ball that Shanto pushed away from the body. But it flew toward Virat Kohli at first slip after a thick edge. Kohli fumbled and the ball deflected toward wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant who somehow pouched it safely. The on-field umpires chatted a bit before going upstairs for the third umpire who then gave it a dismissal.

Shanto departed after scoring 67 runs with seven fours. Soon after Shanto’s dismissal, no. 3 batter Yasir Ali became a victim of Axar Patel. Bangladesh have so far scored 137/2 (at the time of writing this article). Hasan and Litton Das are at crease playing at 5* and 1*, respectively.

The 124-run stand is also the second highest for Bangladesh. Junaid Siddique and Tamim Iqbal had stitched a 200-run stand in 2010.

In their second innings, India declared after reaching 258 runs. Shubman Gill slammed his maiden Test ton (110 with 10 fours and three maximums), while veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara also reached his personal fastest century (102 off 130 balls with 13 fours).

In India’s first innings, Shreyas Iyer’s 86, Ravichandran Ashwin’s 58, and Kuldeep Yadav’s 40, and Pant’s quick 46 helped the team to reach 404. Kuldeep was the star bowler for India as he completed a fifer in his first Test after 22 months.
