The Beijing Winter Olympics are around the corner and ahead of the marquee event, let’s meet the mascots of the 24th Winter Olympics. The Beijing Winter Olympics mascot is a Giant Panda, Bing Dwen Dwen. In Mandarin Chinese (the official dialect of China), the most common meaning of “Bing” is ice.

The word also symbolises purity and strength, while “Dwen Dwen” means robust and lively, and also represents children. The Panda is revered as a Chinese national treasure and is deeply loved by people from all over the world, especially young people.

The mascot embodies the strength and willpower of athletes and will help to promote the Olympic spirit. Bing Dwen Dwen wears a full-body “shell” made out of ice, which resembles an astronaut suit. The shell is a nod to embracing new technologies for a future with possibilities. The shell also gives Bing the ability to skate, snowboard and ski alongside the Olympic athletes.

The design for Bing Dwen Dwen was picked from over 5,800 submissions from the host nation China and 35 countries around the globe as part of a global competition. The designs were reviewed by Chinese and international experts, as teams from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and Jilin University of the Arts made the final selection.

The Paralympic mascot is called Shuey Rhon Rhon, a lantern child eager to welcome athletes from around the world. The name signifies warmth, friendship, courage and perseverance.
