At present, two ATP 500 events are underway, in Basel and Vienna. Several top players will be playing in either of these two events.

This is the 51st edition of the Vienna Open, and the event will be held at the Wiener Stadthalle. The tournament kick-started on October 20, and the final will be held on October 26.

World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz, however, won’t be in action this week as he will directly play the last Masters 1000 of the season, the Paris Masters, scheduled to start on October 27. Alcaraz was last seen in action at the Six Kings Slam, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the final. His last official match was in the Japan Open as he skipped the Shanghai Masters.

As per the new ATP rule, players have to participate in at least four ATP 500 tournaments, one of which should be after the US Open. Sinner has so far played just one ATP 500 event (Halle Open).

He has already arrived in Vienna and will lock horns with Daniel Altmaier on October 21. Before Vienna, he was in Riyadh for the Six Kings Slam, ending the tournament in his favor by defeating Alcaraz and winning the $6 million as prize money.

Sinner skipped the Vienna Open last year. The four-time Grand Slam champion clinched the Vienna title in 2023 by defeating Daniil Medvedev, who is also set to play the event to chase his second title of the season, following the Almaty Open, where, in the final, he defeated Corentin Moutet in three sets.

It was the Russian ace’s first title since his 2023 Italian Open win. Medvedev will only face Sinner if both of them reach the final.

Apart from Medvedev and Sinner, Alexander Zverev will also be playing the Vienna Open. Zverev is suffering from a slump in form and has won just the Munich Open, losing the finals of the Australian Open (to Sinner) and the Stuttgart Open (to Taylor Fritz).

Other seeded players in the draw are: Alex de Minaur, Lorenzo Musetti, Karen Khachanov, Andrey Rublev, and Alexander Bublik. Jack Draper is the defending champion, but he won’t be playing as he is nursing an arm injury he suffered during the US Open.

The prize pool for this year’s Vienna Open is $3,189,554. From this, the winner will receive $596,569, while the runner-up will get $320,980, respectively.

Round of 32$24,878
Round of 16$46,651
Quarterfinals$87,392
Semifinals$171,061
Runner-up$320,980
Champion$596,569

It’s an indoor hard-court tournament, and a total of 32 players are participating, four of whom secured a spot in the main draw after the qualifying rounds, and three of whom are the wild card entrants. Eight of these are the seeded ones.

From the seeded players, apart from Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and Alexander Zverev have won the Vienna Open. Medvedev defeated Denis Shapovalov in 2022, while Zverev beat Frances Tiafoe the previous year. Rublev was the winner in 2020, beating Lorenzo Sonego. Last year, Jack Draper defeated Karen Khachanov.

Following the Vienna Open and the Swiss Indoors, the tennis world will shift its focus to the Paris Masters, where Zverev will enter as the defending champion. Sinner had skipped it last year, while Carlos Alcaraz lost in his second match. If Sinner wins in Vienna, it won’t be enough for him to dethrone Alcaraz from the No.1 rankings.

After two ATP 250 events, the first edition of the Hellenic Championship in Athens and the Moselle Open in Metz will start on November 3, following which, Turin will host the ATP Finals, where Sinner will enter as the defending champion.
