Premier League: Where will Brentford finish in the 2021/22 season?

 What a game that was in the English Premier League on Saturday between Liverpool and Brentford!? Both teams traded the blows to each other and particularly, Brentford impressed everyone. So, now the question arises. Where will Brentford finish in the 2021/22 season?

Brentford made it to the English top-flight after 74 long years. Many predicted them to be easy pushovers but it is not the same case so far in the Premier League. They started with a win against the Gunners and have lost just once in the six games. They have already won two and are looking to finish mid-table. But will they be able to? And if yes, how will they be able to?

Ivan Toney has been the star of the season for Brentford. He has four G/A to his name in six games and played a crucial role for Brentford in the game against Liverpool. The team is shaping up well ahead of the busy and festive season in the English top-flight.

Brentford are known for their high pressing system under their manager Frank. He, like Marcelo Bielsa, has developed a team of warriors who can run relentlessly up and down the pitch. The animated manager has always been critical about his squad members which have got the best of the players.

Against Liverpool, the team employed an attacking formation that was flexible enough to work as a defensive shell as well. While defending, they had five members in the backline and shut down anything from the wings. We can see from the previous game that Liverpool failed to get anything from the wings and it came from the midfield. The second goal of Salah was created from Fabinho’s long ball whereas Curtis Jones found the back of the net after a deflection. 

The team is able to hit on the counter as well. While attacking, the central defenders remain in the position but wingbacks certainly join as the wingers and overload the opposition half with numbers. They will be having a minimum of six and a maximum of eight when they completely transfer themselves to attack. Here is how most of the attacks have been formed by Brentford’s team.

Historical Analysis:

In the previous seasons, the teams that got promoted to the top division were able to perform well and finish higher up on the points table. We shall consider the likes of Sheffield United and Leeds United who were promoted to the top-flight in the 2019/20 season and 2020/21 season respectively.

Blades, in their first top-flight season, were a force to reckon. They also played a 5-3-2 formation and were able to keep up the tempo throughout the game. Chris Wilder was knocking on the doors of Europe before bowing out to the ninth position in the post-pandemic period. 

The case was similar with Leeds United as well. The team under Marcelo Bielsa played high-tempo football but with a different formation. However, they were able to knock on the doors of Europe only to be disappointed at the end of the season. They also finished ninth on the points table. So what will happen to the Bees?

Predicting Brentford’s 2021/22 Premier League season:

To determine the position of the team, we derive at the equation, 7.86-1.5930*(Number of goals scored)+2.7760*(Number of goals conceded). Considering the current parameters, we conclude that the Bees will finish in the ninth position (According to the above analysis, the Bees will be able to get 55+ points in the English Premier League). Or, in other words, they can finish at the top half of the points table.
