Jorge Masvidal is determined to make a return on UFC’s projected White House event. While touting veteran stats of 35-17 MMA and 12-10 UFC, ‘Gamebred’ hasn’t fought in a while. Masvidal took his out after his April 2023 loss to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287. However, one name that makes it worthwhile for him is Colby Covington.
The America 250 July 4th White House Concept PPV card is the talk of town, which has pulled out fighters out of the woodwork, even when massive championship bouts could not. With fights remaining in his UFC contract when he pulled the plug on lacing up, Jorge Masvidal is set on it. Moreover, with his history with President Donald Trump, he thinks he likes his chances to compete.
Donald Trump was [like] the only Republican to ever win in Miami in the last 30 years, or something crazy …Trump said it himself, ‘Masvidal is my favorite, he won me Miami, Florida…So Trump, that one favor I need, get me on the White House card, brother, let’s go. I’ll call Trump myself, I got his number on speed dial. I’ll call him. I’ll call my brother Marco Rubio [even]; I wouldn’t mind fighting Colby. I would love to f**king take his head off in front of the White House lawn. I don’t think UFC will care to f**king book Colby for anything, but who knows…
Jorge Masvidal in an Exclusive interview to CasinoHawks
Masvidal iterated that fighting in Washington on the South Lawn could be the most ‘American thing possible.’ In the timeframe of a UFC comeback with numerous ups and downs, he had mentioned names like Ilia Topuria and Conor McGregor. The Miami native has also laid out blueprints for prime PPV rematches. However, no other rivalry would ever topple the one with Colby Covington.
In their UFC 272 PPV welterweight main event, ‘Chaos’ outworked him as the real “King of Miami,” with a 49-46, 50-44, 50-45 unanimous decision on the judges’ cards. As the fight ended with Covington on top mount, security personnel had to keep them separated. Masvidal even sucker punched him later, outside at a steakhouse.

Once friends, their bitter rivalry is almost palpable. Other than Covington, Masvidal has also wished on a rematch with Kamaru Usman to break the 0-2 losing run. Usman made a big splash over rising contender Joaquin Buckley at the UFC on ESPN 69 main event and sent him again packing. Before this, Buckley had logged a tremendous doctor-stoppage victory over Covington to climb the contention ladder.
Jorge Masvidal wants to resolve things with Kamaru Usman
The POTUS might have his favorite fighter in Colby Covington. But ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ is yet another name Trump has lauded over the years, and while in his campaign as a three-time GOP Nominee. Once a Democrat, he switched to support and even endorsed his 2024 Presidential campaign last autumn. So that dynamic could work in favor as well for a White House super fight.

Usman, though, is relying on his recent comeback to help him make bigger matches. Former longtime UFC 155-pound champ Islam Makhachev is soon to make a welterweight entry. He is poised to be the current crown’s first title defense, maybe somewhere after October.
Usman wants top names to get back to his former glory; he made a stellar 5-0 defense in his first title reign after all. As a former #1 pound-for-pound, he thus also wants to make a stylistic matchup with Makhachev (now also a former #1 pound-for-pound fighter), gradually.
Other than that, he has a prime rivalry with ex-champ Belal Muhammad on queue. If not for those, Jorge Masvidal wants to bank on their history for a return option against the No.5-ranked welterweight.
I have a lot of respect for Kamaru, but I would like to run it back as well. Both times we got to fight were short notice for both of us; [So this time], I would like a proper camp, 10 or 11 weeks to get ready for that animal and go to war with him on the lawn [maybe].

However, as mentioned, Usman has other goals, and duking it out on this doesn’t make his case to return to glory days. He gains nothing here as Gamebred has been out of the MMA sphere for a while now and would need serious backing to make this matchup.
The Miami native last fought a boxing bout in his 10-round majority decision loss in a Fanmio-sponsored affair. If not for these two, Masvidal has amped up talk of a return fight with prizefighter and former Bellator brand face Michael Chandler, who is also an ardent Trump supporter.
