37-year-old Von Miller is poised to join the fifth team of his NFL career. According to sources, the former Defensive Rookie of the Year has agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys.

Last week, Miller dropped a major hint about signing with his hometown club. He posted a photo of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott holding the Super Bowl.

Miller played college football for the Texas A&M Aggies. He was drafted 2nd overall by the Denver Broncos in 2011. Four years later, he helped the Broncos win their third franchise championship.

In 2021, Denver exercised the 2021 option in Miller’s contract. However, he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams, where he won his second Super Bowl ring. From 2022 to 2024, Miller was part of the Buffalo Bills team, and last year he played meaningful snaps with the Washington Commanders.

Despite racking up 9 sacks, the Commanders declined the chance to extend his contract. Miller entered free agency and has been campaigning to join the Cowboys ever since.

On August 16, ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced that the Cowboys agreed to sign Von Miller. The DeSoto native reunites with Marcus Dixon, the Cowboys defensive line coach. Dixon was the Rams assistant D-line coach when Miller won his second with the Rams.

Besides bagging a couple of rings and becoming the best player at Super Bowl 50, Miller has earned 7 All-Pro and 8 Pro Bowl accolades. In 2023 games, Miller has accumulated 607 combined tackles, 138.5 sacks, 177 TFLs, 27 forced fumbles, 9 forced returns, and two interceptions.

Von Miller brings experience and knowledge to the Dallas Cowboys

Last season, the Dallas Cowboys conceded 500+ points, which played a big part in missing the playoffs. Matt Eberflus was fired, and owner Jerry Jones brought in Christian Parker from the Eagles coaching staff.

Parker belongs to the Vic Fangio coaching tree, making him one of the sought-after defensive gurus in football. Before his time in Philly, Parker coached the Broncos DBs, turning Patrick Surtain and Justin Simmons into top players.

So, there’s some familiarity between Parker and Von Miller. Miller joins a very young outside linebacker room that now features three first-round picks in Rashan Gary and Dallas’ 2026 selection Malachi Lawrence. They pair up with Cowboys’ 2025 second-round pick Donovan Ezeiruaku, James Houston, Sam Williams, Marist Liufau and Tyrus Wheat.

It’s unclear how many snaps Miller will get, but he is bound to have a big influence on the younger players.

Cowboys need more sacks

While Denver led the league with 68 sacks in 2025, the Cowboys were on the other end of the spectrum. Dallas only had 35 sacks (25th in the league).

Jadeveon Clowney, with 8.5 sacks, finished as the Cowboys’ sack leader, followed by James Houston with 5.5 and 3.5 sacks from Osa Odighizuwa. However, Clowney has signed with the Houston Texans, while Odighizuwa moved to the Bay Area to play for the San Francisco 49ers.

Even though Von Miller is pushing 40, the star pass rusher accumulated 9 sacks and 26 tackles in limited snaps as a Commander. Miller should add the killer edge the Cowboys have been lacking since losing Micah Parsons.

Jerry Jones wants to win a fourth Super Bowl

Jones, 83, has won three Super Bowls as the Cowboys owner. But the last of the three came in 1995. The Cowboys haven’t even made it to the NFC Championship game since.

However, within the last three years, Jones has signed Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Quinnen Williams to new contracts and has managed to keep George Pickens for one year. Dallas also selected arguably the best player in the 2026 draft, safety Caleb Downs.

This is as urgent as I’ve ever felt Jerry. Sure, there’s times he’s said it, and then we’ve looked up and he hadn’t done much in free agency. Or this, this and that. But [starting from] free agency, they started doing things they hadn’t done. And its kudos to [head coach Brian Schottenheimer] and [vice president of player personnel] Will [McClay] and the whole team, but it’s also Jerry making that decision of being aggressive and trying to go out and get what he wants.

Dak Prescott told Yahoo Sports

Jones also teased that he won’t hesitate to part ways with high draft picks to improve the roster even more. He did not need to give up any for Miller, but he could use one or maybe even two to poach All-Pro edge Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders.
