Stefon Diggs is heading back to the NFC. He has signed a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders.

Diggs entered free agency after the New England Patriots cut him earlier in the year. In July, Adam Schefter of ESPN had reported that at least five teams were interested in signing Diggs. Among them were the Commanders and the Baltimore Ravens.

Diggs hails from Maryland, so signing with either of them made sense. Then again, he gently teased that he wanted to play in Washington so he could stay close to his mother.

According to reports, Washington also had eyes on Brandon Aiyuk. However, Diggs emerged as the leading candidate due to Aiyuk’s colorful offseason exploits.

Last week, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler revealed that there’s mutual interest between Diggs and the Commanders. Without wasting much time, general manager Adam Peters made the move and signed the Pro Bowler to a one-year extension, worth up to $12 million.

The Commanders are the second NFC team Diggs will suit up for in his career. He began his NFL journey with the Minnesota Vikings, followed by stints with the Buffalo Bills, the Houston Texans, and the Patriots. Diggs has played 161 games in the NFL, catching 942 passes for 11,504 yards and scoring 74 touchdowns.

The Commanders did have a great 2025 season. With Jayden Daniels suffering a season-ending elbow injury, the Commanders struggled to win games and finished with a 5-12 record.

Daniels wasn’t the only casualty last year. WR1 Terry McLaurin also spent a considerable time on the sidelines. This allowed Deebo Samuel to lead the Washington receivers with 727 yards and 5 touchdowns. Samuel has returned to the San Francisco 49ers.

Behind McLaurin, the Commanders have an unproven WR group in Jaylin Lane, Luke McCaffrey, Dyami Brown, and rookie Antonio Williams. This is where Diggs could be Washington’s best option at WR2. Sure, he may not reach three figures as the second man behind McLaurin, but he can still be a big threat in the end zone.

Financial implications

For the longest time, the Commanders were heavily linked with Aiyuk. The All-Pro wideout wanted to link up with his college teammate Jayden Daniels. However, that’s no longer a viable option because the Niners have to cut Aiyuk for him to join a new team. So, they went with the next best option in free agency, Stefon Diggs.

Diggs has only signed a $12 million contract, which is quite cheap for a team with the fourth-best cap space. Per Spotrac, the Commanders boast $44 million in cap space. Aiyuk would have been more expensive because he’s younger than Diggs, and his last contract paid him $30 million/year.

The Commanders have the leverage to extend Diggs for one more year if he puts up decent numbers. If not, they could easily move on to the next guy in the pecking order.

Stefon Diggs can help Jayden Daniels take the next step in his development

Daniels’ first year in the big league will go down as one of the rookie seasons in history. He helped the Commanders finish second in the division, ahead of the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants. The Commanders won their first playoff game since 2005 and qualified for the club’s first NFC title game since 1991, when Washington last won the Super Bowl. McLaurin had 1096 yards and 13 touchdowns that year.

Assuming Daniels can still deliver a similar season, Diggs’ experience will come in handy. In 2025, Diggs played in the Super Bowl with the Patriots.
