A new piece of evidence has surfaced in the Tony Romo OWI case. According to the police citation, the deputies found alcohol in Romo’s vehicle.
On July 23, the police detained CBS Sports analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback after he drove into the “marked right distress lane to pass vehicles in lanes 1 and 2 during rush hour traffic before he ‘cut across the marked gore’ to get to where he wanted to go.”
Romo told the deputy that he was on his way to see his grandparents who live nearby. The police arrested Romo after he refused to take the breathalyzer test to prove that he had no alcohol in his system.
The police bodycam captured the entire ordeal, but it failed to film a tiny yet important detail. The California Post obtained the police citation, later echoed by The Athletic; the deputies discovered an open container of booze on the passenger door when they impounded Romo’s black Jeep. This could potentially add a $267 fine to Romo’s name.

Moreover, drunk driving is illegal in Wisconsin, so if the court finds Romo guilty, he may have to face a penalty of up to $1,066. He is due in court on September 21.
But not to fear, Kansas City-based attorney Megan Harr/Megan Thee Lawyer has shown interest in defending Romo. Harr tweeted that she has observed several cases similar to Romo’s and would be happy to represent him in court.
Former Philadelphia Eagles LB called out Tony Romo following his arrest
The footage of Romo confessing that he was going to visit his grandparents just before the police arrested him for driving under the influence has divided football Twitter. While some have sympathized with the 46-year-old, others called Romo out for his reckless behavior.

Among them was Emmanuel Acho. The former Eagles LB and FOX Sports analyst criticized Romo for setting a bad example. He said on Speakeasy:
Stop driving recklessly and putting other people at danger. That’s the very first thing. Before I express any empathy, let me expose the reality, which is enough jeopardizing other people’s health because your lack of seriousness as an individual or a human being. That’s my first thought.
Acho doubled down on his take moments later in the same episode. He specifically pointed to the moment when Romo asked if he could call his attorney for consultation after the deputy told him to take the breathalyzer test. He added:
When you get arrested… You lose all dignity. [I mean, all dignity]. He’s trying to call his lawyer. They won’t allow him to call his lawyer. Again, it’s not a constitutional right while you are being detained. After you have been detained, that’s where it’s a different conversation.

Romo played college football at Eastern Illinois. After graduation, he tried his luck in the 2003 NFL draft, but no team selected him. Eventually, he signed an undrafted rookie contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
It took Romo nearly four years to become the starter. He played in 156 games and completed 2829 passes (65.3%) for 34,183 yards, threw 248 touchdowns and 117 interceptions. Romo posted a 78-49 record in the regular season and a 2-4 record in the postseason. Romo went to four Pro Bowls and retired in 2017. He joined CBS Sports as a color analyst and has remained a part of the network ever since.
