Steve Nash and Alejandra Amarilla divorced after the birth of their son, Matteo Nash, and were engaged in a legal battle over child support.
Steve Nash divorced his first wife, Alejandra Amarilla, hours after the birth of their son Matteo
Steve Nash built a legendary career after moving to the Phoenix Suns for the second time. Two league MVPs and leading his team to playoff battles became the hallmark of his career. He was also at the heights of his personal life as he married Alejandra Amarilla, the mother of his twin daughters.
The marriage continued for five years, and the filmmaker was pregnant with their soon to be born son, Matteo Nash. Amarilla later confirmed that they had planned for a son one year ahead of her becoming pregnant. However, after she was pregnant, the couple had announced their separation amidst disputes arising in their marriage.
But that separation showed its ugly head when Steve Nash officially announced the birth of their son in a statement to Life & Style magazine. In what should have been a moment of tremendous joy turned sour a few seconds later when he said this.
That meant the future Hall of Famer had divorced his then wife a few hours after the birth of their son. It had to be quite the unexpected fallout for it to be announced on the same day. However, what came next made matters worse.
Steve Nash’s fight for custody and a restraining order
Post their official separation, Steve Nash went full press with his legal team. On one hand, he wanted full custody of his children. Their legal battle intensified, but he did not get any reprieve as the court awarded joint custody.
Then the two got into a battle for child support. Nash had given his ex-wife a substantial settlement as part of their divorce while also alleging that Amarilla earned enough to not need child support. Due to Arizona laws, the judgement went in his favor.
But in 2013, TMZ reported that Steve Nash took matters further when he filed for a restraining order against the mother of his three children. The restraining order was not of her trying to meet him, rather it was to block her from moving herself and their children to Los Angeles, where Nash was playing at the time.
He was trying to avoid her gaining from California law, which could have seen him pay a lot more than what he did in child support. The restraining order meant she had to stay put. But later on, they settled on an amount.
Both Steve Nash and Alejandra Amarilla have moved on
Four years after this ugly time in his life, the retired NBA star went on to marry volleyball player Lilla Frederick. They went on to have two children, a son and a daughter. Alejandra Amarilla, though, has stayed single and focuses on her time with her children.
Now the former Brooklyn Nets head coach enjoys spending time with his five children and moves around the country, staying active in all forms of sports. It is unknown what relationship he has with his former wife at the moment. Judging by how it went down during that time, it was bound to strain relationships.
But the way their three children appreciate Nash’s current life, it could be it is all good now. His current wife is a big supporter of his two oldest daughters in their efforts to play volleyball. On the other hand, the Canadian spends time playing soccer, his other love, with his two sons.
