The Philadelphia Eagles winning Super Bowl LIX and became the first major championship win of the season. That means, as per the norm, they are expected to schedule a visit to the White House to celebrate their win with the President. With Donald Trump back in power, that visit is a question mark.
This is Trump’s second term as the President of the United States and NFL fans have a fair idea about how his first tenure went. It was during that time that Colin Kaepernick initiated protests against police brutality towards minority communities.
Soon it spurred other players to join in as they kneeled during the National Anthem. This eventually led the President to launch attacks against the league and its players. The situation became a problem during his tenure, as along with other leagues, those protests became a regular affair.
During that time, players and teams started using a different tactic to show their displeasure towards Trump. In 2017, the NBA’s Golden State Warriors became the first major sports team to decline a formal invitation from the White House.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Houston Astros did show up for their ceremonies. But the former did not post about it publicly and the look on Astros star Jose Altuve made it clear he did not want to be there. On top of this, Donald Trump did not even send invites to the women’s basketball college and professional teams.
Then came the Alabama Crimson Tide and head coach Nick Saban told his players it is an opportunity they should not miss despite their political beliefs. Only one player missed the trip, but the same wasn’t the case for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Philadelphia Eagles and their sour relationship with Donald Trump
The Eagles were the next major league champions set to visit the White House. Therefore, Donald Trump’s team sent out the invite. Then news started to come out that only two or three players were willing to go. With 95% of the team not interested, the message was clear.

On top of it, owner Jeffrey Lurie had always maintained his disdain for the 45th and 47th President of the United States. He has backed the Democratic party over the years. Even the mayor of Philadelphia at the time was in support of what the Eagles decided.
Just as he did with the Warriors, Trump declined the invite he sent to the first time Super Bowl champions. In fact, he went on to organize an Eagles fans ceremony to celebrate the American Flag. As per reports, that event looked staged as those 1000 people wore business suits and just one Eagles jersey was spotted.
Rumors have started to indicate that the Philadelphia Eagles might not make it to the White House this time, too. With their owner and the current administration of the city tilting towards Trump’s opponents, there is a chance this rumor might end up becoming true.
Ironically, the team’s only two Super Bowl wins have come during the years of Donald Trump’s Presidential terms. But that may not be a good enough reason for them. However, being the first team to be eligible to visit the White House during this tenure, their decision could set the tone.
