The qualifying rounds of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships are underway at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, while the main draw will start on June 30. Carlos Alcaraz and Barbora Krejcikova will be entering the tournament as the defending champions in their respective events.
Last year, the Spaniard breezed past Novak Djokovic to defend his crown. He had spoiled the Calendar Grand Slam dream of the 38-year-old in 2023 with a thrilling five-set win in the Wimbledon final.
Djokovic last lifted the Wimbledon trophy in 2022 by beating Australia’s Nick Kyrgios. The Serb hasn’t yet won a Grand Slam title since the 2023 US Open and the only Major final he reached since then was at the 2024 Wimbledon.
He will be bidding to join Roger Federer who has eight Wimbledon titles. The Swiss maestro has lifted the most grass-court Majors in the Open Era.
In women’s tennis, 18-time Grand Slam singles champion Martina Navratilova claimed Wimbledon singles nine times. Since 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams, no woman could win the title twice. Last year, Krejcikova beat Jasmine Paolini to become a two-time Major champion.
It was Paolini’s second Grand Slam singles final following the French Open of the same year. She lost the title to five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek, who hasn’t yet reached a final since winning her fourth Roland Garros trophy last year.

Apart from Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, World No.1 Jannik Sinner too is the heavy favorite. Sinner and Alcaraz share the last six Grand Slam titles between them.
The five-time Grand Slam champion, who lifted his fourth grass-court title at the Queen’s Club Championships by beating Jiri Lehecka, ended his campaign on the clay swing with the French Open title. He beat Sinner in five sets which lasted for more than five hours.
Sinner has never reached the Wimbledon final. He lost to Djokovic in the semifinals in 2023, while last year, Daniil Medvedev ended his run in the quarterfinals. The three-time Grand Slam champion then played the Halle Open to defend his title but lost in the second round to Alexander Bublik, who later went past Medvedev in the final.
On the WTA Tour, World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka too has never reached the final of the third Major of the season. She had played in the semifinals in 2021 and 2023 but skipped the event last year because of an injury.
The Belarusian has lost both the Australian Open and the French Open finals this year, to Madison Keys and Coco Gauff, respectively. Gauff has reached the last 16 of Wimbledon thrice but never was successful in advancing to the quarterfinals.
