Jannik Sinner vs. Carlos Alcaraz: Match Preview

Another Wimbledon win will make Carlos Alcaraz the second player in the Open Era to complete the rare Channel Slam for consecutive seasons, joining Bjorn Borg. Just a month ago, the Spaniard came from two sets down and saved three championship points to eke out a win over Jannik Sinner in what has now become the longest French Open final as the match lasted for five hours and 29 minutes.

Last year, Alcaraz went past World No.3 Alexander Zverev in five sets to lift his career’s first French Open title. Later, he breezed past Novak Djokovic to defend his Wimbledon title. It was the Serb whom Alcaraz had to overcome in five sets in the 2023 Wimbledon final.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion, for the first time since 2018, has failed to book a berth in the Wimbledon final. Also for the first time in his career, he lost to Sinner at SW19 in their third meeting.

If Alcaraz beats the World No.1, he will become the fifth man in the Open Era to take home three consecutive Wimbledon titles, joining Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Djokovic. Apart from his sixth Grand Slam title, the 22-year-old is also bidding to win his sixth title of the season, following his victories in Rotterdam, Monte Carlo, Rome, Paris, and at the Queen’s Club Championships.

Alcaraz will also be playing his seventh final of the season. Apart from the aforementioned finals, Alcaraz also has progressed to the summit clash of the Barcelona Open but could not beat Holger Rune.

Sinner, so far, has clinched just one title this season. Because of his doping ban, he stayed three months on the sidelines and after his return, he played back-to-back finals in Rome and Paris, losing both, to Alcaraz. Following his French Open heartbreak, Sinner failed to defend his Halle Open title, losing to eventual winner Alexander Bublik in the second round.

Alcaraz has so far dropped five sets at Wimbledon and was on the verge of defeat in the first round against Fabio Fognini. Sinner has dropped just two, both against Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round, but ended up receiving a walkover from the Bulgarian, who injured his right pectoral muscle.

Alcaraz has an edge over Sinner in the Wimbledon final. At Wimbledon, Sinner is chasing his second grass-court title. Alcaraz already has four titles under his belt on the surface. Apart from two Wimbledon titles, Alcaraz has lifted two trophies at the Queen’s Club Championships.

Match prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in five sets.
