“Win of a lifetime” Twitter reacts to Lorenzo Sonego’s shocking victory over World No.1 Novak Djokovic in Vienna
Novak Djokovic, Lorenzo Sonego

In an absolutely shocking turn of events, Novak Djokovic was handed his third defeat of the year with the score 6-2, 6-1. This came by the hands of World No.42, Lorenzo Sonego who initially didn’t even qualify to play in the Erste Bank Open.

Earlier this week, Sonego lost a three-setter in the final round of Vienna qualifying against Aljaz Bedene. He later replaced Diego Schwartzman after his withdrawal from the tournament and has not lost a set since. Moreover, he cranked the level upto eleven and shocked the 81-time tour-level title-holder in just 68 minutes.

The 25-year-old Italian is the first ‘lucky-loser’ to have defeated 17-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic. Further, this stands to be the first semi-final that Sonego has reached this year. Djokovic has already added 4 titles to his mantle and has succeeded in securing the year-end World No.1 ranking for the 6th time.

“For sure it’s the best victory of my life. Novak is the best in the world. Today I played so, so good,” said Sonego in his on-court interview.

The reactions after Djokovic’s unexpected loss

Even though Nole has given his due to Sonego, calling him “better in every segment,” the tennis community has expressed their bewilderment at what unfolded. They made their shock apparent over what was initially considered a set-in-stone victory for Novak. However, Sonego produced a master-class in Austria yesterday and many tipped their hats to him.

Sonego will be seen in action later today in the semi-finals. Likewise, he will clash against the unseeded Dan Evans. On the other side, Djokovic will head on to compete in the last tournament of the season, the ATP finals.
