Fans call out Commissioner Adam Silver for NBA's declining viewership of NBA Finals with $76 Billion TV rights deal coming up
The NBA is set to sign a massive $76 Billion TV deal on the basis of the fan following it enjoys throughout the world. However, the NBA Finals that just concluded have brought in a cause for concern. The matchups between the Dallas Mavericks and the Boston Celtics saw a decline in viewership, leading fans to call out Commissioner, Adam Silver.
The NBA Finals used to draw more than 14 million views. However, as per Sports Media Watch, this year’s finals drew only 11.31 million viewers. A steady decline was already in effect for the past few years. But with the NBA looking to broker the monster TV rights deals with networks, this is a cause for concern. After all, networks looking to pay that money would want the league to increase its viewership. Instead, this brings the declining state of the game into focus.
In fact, many former players and fans alike have been vocal about the offense focused game. This has led to a decline in the overall quality of the game. Something that was evident when Team USA embarrassingly exited the FIBA world championships. That showed that the international game has caught up and is better.
The younger players are not at the level of LeBron James and Stephen Curry. But the NBA cannot bank upon those two forever. Adam Silver needs to come up with ideas to bring fans back to the sport.

The most apparent difference to the game this season was how the defense was punished. The same defense that propelled championship teams of the past and brought a certain grit to the game. Additionally, the methods with which the league decided end-of-season awards have also rubbed fans the wrong way.
All in all, fans may not be wrong to call out Commissioner Adam Silver. After all, he is the one that has to decide how the league operates. Check out some of their comments on social media below:
If the NBA continues to lose viewers every year, it will be hard-pressed to justify the demands it makes on such TV rights deals. More importantly, fans will switch to other sports. They cannot forever depend on LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
