Andrew Schulz questions Brittney Griner’s prisoner swap

Brittney Griner faced no end to her trial period in Russian after pleading guilty to charges made against her. Even after much effort of convincing the court that her wrongdoings were not intentional, they never budged to spare her from punishment. In the end, she received a nine-year sentence that was to be served at the Russian Penal Colonies. The entire world were worried over her safety considering how politically driven the Russians really are.

Over a week ago, the WNBA legend was given the green light to come back to the United States via a prisoner swap. The exchange took place last Thursday. The US administration sent the Russians Viktor Bout in exchange for Griner. Bout was a notorious arms dealer that helped terrorists organizations.

However, ex-marine Paul Whelan was also included in the package earlier, but the trade did not fall through with him. American Comedian Andrew Schulz questioned the US Governement’s motives behind the prisoner swap. He claimed that it was terrible that they did not raise efforts for Whelan’s release despite him being trapped in Russian for four years now. He believes the government’s choice was solely made on the idea of initiating a strong political presence with US citizens.

“But I think the issue with me as it seems like they made the trade for only Brittney for political points. It seems like it’s a little bit of like a virtue signal, if you will… I don’t like the idea that we are gonna trade this ‘Merchant of death’, a guy who is responsible for probably tens and thousands of deaths and like destabilization around the world which we are also responsible for. But it doesn’t exactly feel like a fair trade. And if you are doing it just to get a PC pat on the back. It feels a little gross, right?” he said on the FLAGRANT podcast.
