A string of low scores against England and South Africa saw Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey lose his place in the T20 side. His form continued to dip as he took to the field only thrice in his debut Indian Premier League (IPL) season. And came up with scores of 14*, 14 and 4 replacing explosive glovesman Rishabh Pant in the Delhi Capitals side.

But he did gain something during the IPL stint. Carey shares that he got to spent a lot of time with Capitals coach Ricky Ponting. The glovesman adds that he worked on the technical aspects of his game with Ponting. And is hoping to return in the shortest format as the T20 World Cup draws closer.

My first opportunity to be part of IPL and to have Ricky as head coach of Delhi and a few other familiar faces in the squad made it a really enjoyable couple of months,” Carey told Cricbuzz.

I was lucky enough to work with him through the World Cup last year and formed a good relationship. He was an amazing player, and is an amazing coach, and he picks up on little things really quickly. We had a lot to talk about and although I didn’t play a lot of games it gave me a lot of opportunity to train and just work on a few little technical parts of my game which will hopefully help me grow and develop and have a successful summer,” he explained.

I’m doing everything I can to get back

The return of David Warner saw top-order batter Carey make way for him alongside skipper Aaron Finch. The push down to the middle order has made him a versatile batsman who is able to fire in every position in the order. But the story was not the same in South Africa as he recorded scores of 27, 14, 7.

Carey’s poor run with the bat continued in England as he scored just three runs in two games. He did so batting once at the top and playing in the middle order on the other occasion before being dropped for the third T20. The South Australia batsman assures that he is doing his best to get back into the T20 side and is gearing to up to adapt to his role as a floater in the line-up.

I guess my numbers in the past few T20s probably allowed the opening of the door for Wadey to come in. I never like being left out of any team but it’s allowed me to go away and develop. If it’s a lower-order role or back up the top of the order, I’m doing everything I can to get back into that team and it’s something I want to do,” he said.

The keeper-batsman will be a key player for the Kangaroos in the ODI series against India as he comes off a scintillating ton in England.
