World Boxing Championship 2021: Narender Berwal, Akash Kumar among four Indian boxers who advance into quarter-finals
Narender Berwal and Akash Kumar
As many as four Indian boxers have stormed into the quarterfinal of the ongoing World Boxing Championship 2021. Akash Kumar (54kg), Nishant Dev (71kg), Narender Berwal (+92kg) and Sanjeet (92kg) punched their tickets for the quarterfinal in what turned out to be a great day for the Indian pugilists. They are now a win away from securing a medal.
Akash Kumar stormed into the quarter-finals with a comprehensive victory against Puerto Rico’s Caleb Tirado. Making good use of his height, Akash landed some sharp punches to tilt the momentum in his favour before securing a 5-0 win in his first match in the tournament. The 21-year-old had received a walkover in the first round.
World Boxing Championship 2021: Nishant Dev’s dream debut continues
Nishant Dev made his World Championships debut this edition and is now just a win away from confirming a podium finish. Nishant got off to a stunning start against Laszlo Kozak as he beat the Hungarian 5-0. The 20-year-old then went on to topple Merven Clair before defeating Mexico’s Marco Alvarez Verde 3-2 to enter the quarterfinal. Nishant was named as the Promising Boxer of the Year at the National Championships earlier this year.
Sanjeet, a quarterfinalist from the previous edition, outboxed Georgia’s Giorgi Tchigladze 4-1 to enter the quarterfinals for a second successive time. He will be facing Italy’s Aziz Abbes Mouhiidine in the last eight stage. Later tonight, Rohit Mor (57kg), Akash Sangwan (67kg), Sumit (75kg), and five-time Asian medallist Shiva Thapa (63.5kg) will be in action looking to secure quarterfinal berths.
