World Cup Qualifiers: Brazil continue their unbeaten run by beating Uruguay
Brazil made light work of Uruguay on their way to a 2-0 win in the World Cup Qualifiers. This win cemented Brazil’s position at the top of the table and two points clear of Argentina. Arthur and Richarlison got the goals as Brazil pulled off the victory. Meanwhile, Uruguay hit the woodwork twice and had Cavani sent off in a pulsating encounter. Furthermore, this loss caused Uruguay to slip to 5th place in the table. Moreover, Uruguay significantly missed the presence of Suarez as he tested positive for Covid-19 prior to the match. Meanwhile, Brazil easily overcame the absence of Neymar and Coutinho to keep their winning run intact.
First Half
Uruguay started out strongly and hit the crossbar through Nunez within five minutes of the start. However, Brazil came back strongly and got the opening goal through Arthur. The player took a shot from outside the box after receiving a pass from Jesus and the shot took a huge deflection on the way to the goal. Nevertheless, it was a huge moment for Arthur since it was his first goal in a Brazil shirt. Brazil continued to probe for another goal and Richarlison duly delivered by scoring a header from a Lodi cross. Uruguay once again went close to getting back into the match but hit the woodwork again through a Godin header.
Second Half
The match was more subdued in the second half as both teams couldn’t put together any meaningful attack. However, the talking point of the second half in the 71st point as Cavani made a rash challenge on Richarlison. The player initially received a yellow but it was later changed to a Red after a VAR check by the referee. Hence, Uruguay were playing with 10 players in the match but still tried their best to make a comeback. They got the ball in the net through Caceres but the goal was ruled out for offside in a unlucky day for Uruguay.
Meanwhile, Richarlison forgave Cavani for the dangerous challenge and felt it was unintentional. The player speaking to CBF TV said, “If my foot was planted there on the floor, maybe it could have even broken my ankle. I don’t think he meant it. I think he went there to get the ball but missed and took my foot. It’s a normal game situation.”
