FIFA has decided to cancel the U-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled to be hosted in India this year. The initial plan was to postpone the tournament to February of 2021. However, this didn’t look feasible because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the preparation for the teams and the lack of spectators in the stadium. Nevertheless, the good news is that India will get the hosting rights for 2022 and will also have adequate time for preparing. Moreover, they will also need to prepare a new team as the previous team will not be eligible due to players crossing the age limit.

FIFA put out a statement saying, “As a result and after careful consideration of the feedback received by the stakeholders combined with the inability to further postpone these tournaments, the FIFA-Confederations COVID-19 Working Group subsequently recommended that the 2020 editions of the two women’s youth tournaments be cancelled and that the hosting rights for the 2022 editions be offered to the countries that were due to host the 2020 editions.”

Thus, India will now look to put all their efforts in building in a new team. Moreover, all the construction work for hosting has already been completed. In addition, India will also be hosting the Women’s AFC Asian Cup in 2022. These tournaments will go a long way in developing Women’s Football in India.

In other news, FIFA has also decided to schedule the FIFA Club World Cup in February 2021 instead of the next month. Bayern Munich are huge favorites for winning this tournament after clinching the Champions League.
