Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Paris Olympics due to tonsillitis. The top-ranked men’s tennis player revealed his disappointment on social media after being one of the favorites to win the Olympic Games gold medal.
Jannik Sinner has been one of the best players so far in the ATP this year winning four titles including a Grand Slam. With 42 wins and 4 losses, he has played in the majority of the tournaments this season. However, the first time he withdrew from an event was in the quarterfinals Madrid Open due to a hip injury. A week later, he also withdrew from the Italian Open.
The 22-year-old first showed signs of illness in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and went on to lose the match against Daniil Medvedev in five sets. Following the defeat, he withdrew from the Nordea Open in Bastad admitting he needed rest. After a week’s break, he took ill and didn’t arrive with Italy’s Olympic Team in Paris.
After days of keeping fans waiting, Sinner finally revealed on social media that he suffered tonsillitis after a week of good training on the clay court.
After a good week of clay training, I started to feel unwell. I spent a couple of days resting and during a visit the doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing. Missing the Games is a huge disappointment as it was one of my main goals for this season. I couldn't wait to have the honor of representing my country in this very important event.Jannik Sinner wrote via X
