Following news of the postponement of South Africa’s tour of Australia, it is now assured that New Zealand are the first team to qualify for the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) which will take place at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in June. Australia’s hopes now hang by a thread with the points deduction that they suffered during the Test match against India in Melbourne due to slow over-rate rubbing salt into their wounds.
New Zealand don’t have the highest points in the table at the moment but they are first on account of percentage of points collected which was introduced as the new rule to settle the table after the COVID-19 pandemic caused a lot of disruption to the usual schedule leading to a plethora of Test series being canceled or postponed.
India in driver’s seat to join New Zealand
With India’s home series of fourth matches against England being the only series left between teams in contention to make it to the final of the WTC, it assumes humongous significance and Australia would be keenly watching it. For Australia to qualify, the following results will have to take place: a 1-0 win for India, a 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 win for England or a drawn series. If any other result takes place, they will be out.
For India to qualify, they’ll have to win the series by any margin other than 1-0. Therefore, 2-1, 2-0, 3-0, 3-1 and 4-0 in favor of India will see them qualify for the final. England will qualify only if they beat India by a 3-0, 3-1 or 4-0 margin which could be very difficult to pull off especially given India’s home dominance and the fact that India are in sublime form at the moment off the back of the terrific series win in Australia.
