Jerry Lawler has made immense contributions to the wrestling industry. Whether as a wrestler or commentator, he is an integral part of many people’s childhoods. WWE recently took a decision not to renew the 74-year-old’s wrestling contract, resulting in the end of a 32-year-old relationship.
According to a recent report by PWInsider, the WWE decided not to renew Jerry Lawler’s contract. The King was signed on to the company as an announcer and a commentator. The former WCWA World Heavyweight Champion joined the company back in 1992 as an announcer. He played the role of a ringside announcer throughout the Attitude Era and most of the PG era until 2016.
While he had not been seen on commentary for a while already, this move has made his exit from the company official. It seems that the wrestling legend won’t be returning to our TV screens any time soon. Note that while the Memphis-born is no longer with the company as a commentator, he is still signed to a WWE Legends contract. This gives the WWE rights to the wrestler’s likeness and allows them to pay him per appearance in the future.
The new era of WWE has meant kicking out the old. The company infamously cut all ties with Vince McMahon after the filing of the Janel Grant lawsuit and other sexual misconduct allegations dating back to WWE. The company’s COO, Brad Blum, and Executive Vice President of Television Production, Kevin Dunn, also parted ways with the promotion.
Fans hilariously joke about Tony Khan signing Jerry Lawler to AEW
Now that Jerry Lawler did not have a working relationship with WWE, many fans joked about him being signed by Tony Khan for AEW. His commentary partner during the Attitude Era, Jim Ross, occasionally works for the Jacksonville-based promotion. They mentioned how the duo could come together again and joked about them being the commentary duo for the next AEW All-In PPV.
Several fans expressed their approval of the idea. While they had a lot of respect for the wrestling legend, it was time to move on as he no longer fit the commentary role for any WWE show. On the other hand, many were highly opposed to this idea. Fans believed that he deserved better treatment after being loyal to the Stamford-based promotion for decades.
Several others expressed concern for the commentator. They claimed this was a cold-hearted move by the WWE. It is no secret that the multi-time USWA champion was a heart patient. He had even suffered a heart attack live on an episode of Monday Night Raw. Additionally, the Hall of Famer has also been recovering from a stroke that he recently suffered.
