Danka Kovinić vs Yulia Putintseva: Preview

Kovinić came into Charleston 2021 on the back of a mediocre hardcourt season. But a change of surface seems to have done the trick for the player from Montenegro. She beat Qualifier Gabriela Talaba from Romania in straight sets, 7-6 6-4, in the first round. In the second round, she got the better of Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada, in three sets, 6-4 3-6 6-3.
Her best performance in this tournament came in the third round against Petra Kvitova. Kovinić beat the world no.11 very convincingly in straight sets, 6-4 6-1. Her opponent in the Quarter-final is Yulia Putintseva.
Putintseva had overcome a tough opponent in the first round, Harriet Dart fought till the end in her two set defeat. She won her second round match with relative ease against compatriot Zarina Diyas. Her real test was in the third round against Garbine Muguruza.
A match which Muguruza was leading 6-0 2-2, but then she had to withdraw with a foot injury. More of a precautionary move from Muguruza rather than an actual injury. Putintseva is lucky to go through.
Danka Kovinić vs Yulia Putintseva: Head-to-Head

The two players have met twice before on the tour. Both the matches have been won by Putintseva, who leads the head to head 2-0. Their last meeting was six years back at Contrexeville, which Putintseva won 6-1 6-3.
Danka Kovinić vs Yulia Putintseva: Prediction

Kovinić has a big serve and as she showed against Kvitova she is unfazed by big power hitters. She used the pace of Kvitova’s returns beautifully and traded counter pouches galore. Kovinić looks in great nick which unfortunately cannot be said about Putintseva. The lower ranked player Kovinić is surprisingly the favorite in this one.
Match Prediction: Danka Kovinić will beat Yulia Putintseva in three sets.
