Rebecca Peterson, a 26-year-old American, beat the 8th seed Viktorija Golubic in her previous round match, winning 7-6, 6-3. The match included several breakpoint exchanges, particularly in the opening set, but the Swedish maintained her composure and triumphed. The Swedish had previously had a strong showing at her home tournament, the Swedish Open 2021, reaching the Semi-Finals before losing 3-6, 4-6 to Olga Govortsova. In the quarterfinals, she beat Tereza Martincova to advance to the semis, where she will meet first seed Elina Svitolina.

This year hasn’t been Elina Svitolina’s best season. She has yet to reach a single final on the WTA Tour. The Ukrainian lost all of her matches in Montreal and Cincinnati, but she appears to have rediscovered her form in Chicago, where she overcame Clara Burel and Ferro to reach the quarterfinals. She advanced to the semi-finals of the Chicago open 2021 after defeating Kristina Mladenovic.
