Kerber has not had a great run post lockdown. Her only meaningful result was reaching the fourth round of the US Open last year. In the Australian Open 2021 she was knocked out in the very first round by qualifier Bernarda Pera 6-0 6-4. 

At the  Qatar Open she has been a finalist in 2014, she lost the final to Simona Halep. In the first round of the Qatar Open 2021 she defeated Çağla Büyükakçay of Turkey 6-4 6-2. Her second round opponent is Anett Kontaveit.

 Kontaveit was a finalist at the Palermo Open in  August 2020. After that she reached the fourth round of the US Open. But she could not go past the third round of the Australian Open 2021. In the first round here she pulled off a coup by defeating Jennifer Brady 6-1 6-2.
