After winning the 2021 Mubadala World Tennis Championship after defeating Belinda Bencic, the defending Olympic Champion, in the final, Jabeur has been troubled by injuries since the start of this season. She was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open owing to an injury she sustained when playing against Kontaveit in Sydney. This is her first tournament after her comeback and is off to a good start having defeated Vera Zvonareva in the first round in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
On the other hand, Pegula has been at the peak of her form this year. The world no. 16 had two first-round exits this year after a quarter-final finish at Indian Wells, but pulled off a solid performance at the Australian Open, reaching the quarter-finals. This week, the American has sustained her fine form in Dubai. She got off to a strong start by defeating Coco Gauff, one of America’s favorites, in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
