WTA Finals 2022: Know all about the ‘Tracy Austin group’ and the ‘Nancy Richey group’

The WTA Finals tournament will take place from October 31 to November 7 this year. It will mark the conclusion of the 2022 season, and include the top athletes of the year. After 17 years, the event is coming back to the United States Of America and shall take place in Fort Worth, Texas. The groups for the round-robin part of the coveted year-ending championships were drawn on Friday night in Fort Worth, establishing the tone for the 2022 WTA Finals.

The two groups for the women’s singles are named after the former tennis players- Tracy Austin and Nancy Richey. Tracy Austin is a former American tennis player who won the US Open in 1979 and 1981. Nancy Richey is a former American tennis player who won the Australian Open and French Open in 1967 and 1968 respectively.

The Tracy Austin Group includes World No.1 Iga Swiatek of Poland, World No.4 Coco Gauff of the USA, World No.6 Caroline Garcia of France, and World No.8 Daria Kasatkina of Russia. In this group, Coco Gauff and Daria Kasatkina are playing in this tournament for the first time. Iga Swiatek has played in this tournament last year while Caroline Garcia made an entry in the Top 8 for the second time after a long absence.

The Nancy Richey Group includes World No.2 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, World No.3 Jessica Pegula of the USA, World No.5 Maria Sakkari of Greece, and World No.7 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. In this group, Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula are playing in this tournament for the first time while both Aryna Sabalenka and Maria Sakkari have featured in this tournament last year.

Each singles player will go head to head against every one of the different members in their particular group during the initial six days of the competition. After these matches, the two players who would have won the most number of matches from each group will progress to the semi-finals.

Iga Swiatek is in great form. She has won the French Open and the US Open and also won 6 WTA Singles titles this year. She is the favorite to win the WTA Finals trophy. If she can do so, she will be the first Polish player to win the WTA title. Ons Jabeur won two WTA singles titles and made it to the final of Wimbledon and the US Open this year. She has emerged as one of the “brightest spots in the world of sports” this year coming from North Africa.

Jessica Pegula won a WTA singles title recently. She will be looking to win the prestigious trophy. She will be the first American to do so, after 2014, when Serena Williams last won this trophy. Meanwhile, her compatriot Coco Gauff is the youngest player to qualify in this tournament. She stunned the world when she made it to the French Open final this year.

Maria Sakkari has not won any WTA singles title this year, however, she is one of the toughest challenges on the court. She will be looking to end the year on a high note. Caroline Garcia has won three WTA singles titles this year. She last played in the WTA Finals 2017.

Aryna Sabalenka has not won any WTA singles title this year but she must be proud of her performances this year. She is one of the toughest players to beat on the court. Daria Kasatkina has won two WTA singles titles this year. She will be only the second Russian to win the WTA Finals tournament in its history after Maria Sharapova who won it in 2004.

There are sure to be many thrilling matchups in store with the top players from the season gathered in one location.
