Karolina Pliskova vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova: Match Preview

Pliskova has not had a good year by any stretch of the imagination. Apart from a couple of exceptions, she has been ousted in the first or second round in most competitions. The good thing for Pliskova is that she found some sort of form in her first tournament on clay court, the Stuttgart Open. At Stuttgart, she reached the Quarter-finals, at that stage though she was beaten by Ash Barty. She has carried that little ensemble of form into the tournament which was evident in her match against Coco Gauff. She beat Gauff in three sets, 5-7 6-3 6-2. Her second round opponent is twenty-nine year old Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Pavlyuchenkova has had a terrible start to the season, but a first round win over Madison Keys will do her confidence a world of good. Losing eight of her thirteen matches this year looked to have pushed her back, but coming up against a struggling Keys, Pavlyuchenkova got her basics right and found a way to beat the world number 23. In a match lasting an hour and 29 minutes, Pavlyuchenkova won in straight sets 7-5 6-2.
