Petra Kvitova is a former champion on the red clay courts of Madrid Open. She won the tournament in 2015 and 2018. Although the ninth seed has won a WTA 500 last month, Qatar Open, her start to the clay court season has not been that great. First she lost in the round of sixteen in the Charleston Open, then she was ousted in the Quarter-final stage of the Stuttgart Open by old foe Elina Svitolina.

Her first round opponent here is twenty-two year old Marie Bouzkova. Bouzkova has reached the Finals, Phillip Island Trophy, and the Semi-finals of the Abierto Zapopan 2021 this year. She has played only one tournament on clay this year, prior to this, and lost in the second round to Ajla Tomljanovic in 6-4 5-7 5-7.

Having said that, if Bouzkova can get her famed opponent to run around and tire her out then she does have  a good chance. Kvitova will rely on her serve, her groundstrokes and variety in her game to get the better of her opponent.
