Halep has been dealing with a shoulder injury in the recent past. It was the same injury that had forced her to withdraw in the second round of the Miami Open, a match she surrendered to Anastasija Sevastova. But her outing in the Stuttgart Open would indicate that she is over the injury, for now. At Stuttgart she reached the Semi-final stage of the competition, losing to Aryna Sabalenka at that stage.

Her first round opponent in this competition is Sara Sorribes Tormo. Tormo had won the Abierto Zapopan 2021 in Mexico this March, before reaching the Semi-final of the Abierto GNP Seguros. In the Miami Open she lost in the quarter finals to Bianca Andreescu.

Tormo has started the clay court swing disastrously, by losing in the first round of the Copa Colsanitas to Sara Errani. It is not looking too good for Tormo in this first round encounter too.
