WTA TOUR
The WTA Tour is aiming to head into the 2021 season with a major head-start. It has already attained this due to its major re-branding which saw a change in its logo and the classification of events. Further, as opposed to a handful of tournaments that took place in 2020 due to the pandemic, the WTA is well-prepared to give a more well-rounded season.
Recently, the WTA officials have agreed upon some dates for their events, and have proceed to release a calendar for the same. This outlines the first seven weeks of 2021. Here are the highlights for the same:
WTA 500 event – Abu Dhabi opener
The women’s tour will begin with a grand event on the newly-minted courts of Abu Dhabi. While this is a regular feature on the ATP Tour, the venue will host a WTA 500 tournament between 5 to 13 January for the first time.
The schedule for February
The Australian Open 2021 has finally been confirmed by Tournament Director Craig Tiley, to take place from 8 to 21 February. Due to this delay and a strict quarantine protocol, most players are concerned about their warm-up for the first Major of the year.
Keeping this peculiar situation in mind, the WTA officials have agreed upon to ensure at least a three-week action. Further, two concurrent WTA 500 events will be underway from 1 February in Melbourne.
