WWE changes Matt Riddle’s name; Riddle reacts
Riddle rejected the initial offer made by WWE
WWE confirmed that Matt Riddle will now be known as just Riddle. Riddle joined the company back in 2018, and has since been using his original name, Matt Riddle. But recently, WWE dropped “The Original Bro’s” first name from their official website.
According to Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, the decision to drop a part of the name was made my WWE’s Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon. Reportedly, McMahon took the decision right after Riddle and Sheamus’ match at Raw. The two wrestler had faced each other in a qualifier match to earn a spot on Team Raw at Survivor Series. Sheamus emerged victorious in the match. But both of them received praise from McMahon and the WWE producers. It was then that McMahon pitched the idea of dropping the first name, and making his character more serious.
Riddle’s reaction
Matt Riddle was really supportive of the idea of dropping his first name and making his character serious. But it seems like the fans are not too excited with the shortening of the name. Riddle had to tweet to clarify that he is completely supportive of the idea.
In the past multiple WWE stars have had their name shortened. Big E (Langston), (Antonio) Cesaro, (Buddy) Murphy are all part of this list. Retribution leader Mustafa Ali had his name shortened to Ali in March 2019. But fans were not happy with the change. In November 2019, WWE allowed him to switch back to his full name.
Only time will tell whether the WWE Universe accepts the change or forces WWE to reinstate Riddle’s original name. But for the time being WWE fans will just hope that WWE doesn’t get him covered up in question marks!
