Io Shirai is one of the most accomplished Superstars on the NXT roster today. In addition to being a former NXT Women’s Champion, Shirai has also been one-half of the NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions. While she has not featured on the main roster WWE shows, she did perform against main roster Superstars – Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley.
Shirai won her first title in NXT – the Women’s Championship after defeating Flair and Ripley in a triple threat match at TakeOver: In Your House. As the Champion she delivered some performances against the likes of Tegan Nox, Candice Le Rae, Toni Storm and Mercedes Martinez. She held on to the title for a total of 304 days. Her reign as the NXT Women’s Champion came to an end when she was pinned by Raquel Gonzalez at TakeOver: Stand & Deliver Night One, during the Wrestlemania week.
Io Shirai went on a brief break after her title loss, but soon returned – with a Tag Team partner in Zoey Stark. Within weeks of forming the team, the two Superstars became the No.1 Contender’s for the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship. They soon dethroned Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell to win the titles. They recently lost the titles to members of Toxic Attraction – Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne.
Last week on NXT 2.0, Shirai returned to singles competition and challenged Mandy Rose for the title. But she was attacked by Rose’s stablemates – Jayne and Dolin, which lead to a match on the upcoming episode of the colorful brand. Io Shirai mentioned that she does not care who is one her team.
WWE recently announced that Shirai will be teaming up with Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter. They were really supportive of Shirai’s comments and told her to leave all her care behind and party with them. To this the former NXT Women’s Champion said, “You are worse than Zoey.” This could indicated that Shirai was fed up of Stark and decided to end her association with Stark.
Io Shirai might have a long feud with NXT Women’s Champion Mandy Rose
On the upcoming of WWE NXT 2.0 Mandy Rose and Toxic Attraction will be up against Io Shirai and Kayden Carter and Kacy Catanzaro. This could be an indication that Shirai is the first feud for the Women’s Champion Rose. On the other hand Carter and Catanzaro could go after the Tag Team titles.
Rose has been on the WWE roster for far too long and she is finally getting the Championship push that she long deserved. While Shirai also has been a top performer for the company, it is quite unlikely that Rose will be losing the title anytime soon.
