Bret Hart is a name that always comes up when we talk about the greatest WWE stars of all time. But alongside his WWE title reigns and memorable matches, there’s one more incident that fans vividly remember about him, even 25 years later; The Montreal Screwjob!
A controversial act that took the WWE world by storm. Vince McMahon and his stooges allegedly manipulated the match finish, which saw Shawn Michaels winning the WWE title off Bret Hart, despite the latter never tapping out!
Recounting the incident which also gave birth to the Attitude Era, Bret Hart penned an emotional note. Taking to his official Instagram handle, the WWE Hall of Famer described himself as an inevitable part of that. The legend emphasized the fact that we couldn’t control some things coming our way. However, we can dictate it on our terms.
In addition, Bret Hart reminisced about his fantastic career. Surely, it would be an understatement to state that the Montreal Screwjob altered Hart’s wrestling journey by a mile. Indeed, it did a lot more, and just like he mentioned in his address, that day was exactly where Bret found his destiny.

After having a career that spanned over two decades, Bret Hart is truly an inspiration to many. Several upcoming stars and wrestling icons have included the WWE Legend in their Mt. Rushmore of professional wrestling, and rightfully so. Most recently, the Hitman attended WWE Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales.
He sat at ringside for the Intercontinental Championship showdown between Gunther and Sheamus. For those unaware, Bret Hart competed in the main event of WWE’s first-ever PPV in the UK, SummerSlam 1992. And that too, for the Intercontinental Championship against his brother-in-law, The British Bulldog.

Bret Hart has made history everywhere he’s stepped foot. While Vince McMahon and Bret Hart did not have a good relationship following the Montreal Screwjob, the two buried the hatchet after Hart suffered a heart attack in the early 2000s.
The controversy has been referenced several times on WWE TV and has also been used in storylines. It’s safe to say, this is one controversy that brings millions of eyeballs to WWE every year.
