Long title reigns lasting almost a decade weren’t uncommon in WWE throughout the entirety of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. WWE Champions back in those days used to hold their titles for as long as 6-7 years. Recently. WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart made a shocking revelation that Vince McMahon promised him a multiple-year title reign.

In a recent interview with ITR Wrestling, Bret Hart recalled his first championship victory in the WWF (now WWE). He revealed that when he won his first WWF Championship back in 1992. Vince McMahon had promised to give him a long 8-9 year reign with the belt.

“This is not a short-term thing. This is a long-term thing. We’re gonna make you a champion like we did with Bob Backlund or some of these other… we’re going back, you’re going to be champion for maybe seven or eight-nine years“, said Mr. McMahon, according to Bret Hart.

The WWE legend further added that he wasn’t bothered by anything at that point. He believed that he would be in a powerful position for a long time. However, that never came to fruition, as McMahon’s words proved hollow.

However, in less than six months after his title win against Ric Flair, Hit Man dropped his WWF Championship. He lost to Yokozuna in the main event of WrestleMania 9, only for Hulk Hogan to show up and beat Yokozuna in an impromptu match in less than a minute.
