Cody Rhodes will head to Pittsburgh for Payback next week. However, not in the way as everyone would’ve expected. That said, during last night’s episode of SmackDown, WWE announced that The American Nightmare will join The Grayson Waller Effect at the upcoming premium live event. That completely came out of the blue and perfectly contradicts the WWE Draft, which is seemingly ineffective at this point.
It’s better to have something than nothing for Cody Rhodes. He was toying with The Judgment Day for a long time. That even led WWE to rotate the same pattern of matches every week on RAW featuring the faction. Last week on Monday, the group took on Cody Rhodes, Sami Zayn and a returning Kevin Owens. Although everyone had already seen it before, that 6-man tag showdown was gripping.
However, Rhodes is seemingly done with The Judgment Day and can focus on other things. Grayson Waller would be patiently waiting for Cody to have a seat on his talk show, just to rub Rhodes the wrong way. The Brash Aussie has a history of putting in efforts to manipulate legends and established veterans. Judging that way, Cody Rhodes might be the next in line to receive the so-called Grayson Waller rub.
Who knows if their altercation will turn into a match at Payback? Although it could be as random as it gets, doing such a high-caliber match at a PLE would be a smart move from WWE. It would give Cody a fresh opponent to work with. Also, it’s undoubtedly going to benefit The Aussie Icon, as he’s just getting started on the main roster. Whatever the case might be, Waller is bound to hit Cody with some traumatizing questions in Pennsylvania.
Cody Rhodes paid a heartwarming tribute to Terry Funk on SmackDown
The Prodigal Son was brought in for this week’s SmackDown. He paid a heartfelt tribute to WWE Hall of Famer Terry Funk. Cody took everyone down memory lane and told a story about his dad and Funk when Rhodes was 11 years old. He referred to Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt as true cowboys. In Funk’s honor, Rhodes announced a Hardcore Terry Funk Tag-Team Match between The Street Profits and Brawling Brutes.
Both teams engaged in a highly physical bout that lasted longer than usual tag matches on network television. At the end, Bobby Lashley, who was ringside, speared Butch with authority. That resulted in Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins executing their finisher on Ridge Holland through the table.
