“Roman Reigns can surpass that Cena’s superstardom” – WWE commentator Corey Graves thinks the Tribal Chief is WWE’s box office
Cena's recent was a massive surprise
Corey Graves recently discussed the possibility of Roman Reigns succeeding John Cena as WWE‘s top box-office draw. Before reducing his schedule in 2015 to focus on acting, Cena solidified his reputation as the top guy in WWE for more than a decade. Since then, Reigns has been the company’s most recognizable face.
Graves mentioned on his “After The Bell” podcast how every superstar wanted to be on Cena’s tours because those performances paid better. He feels The Tribal Chief has the potential to become as successful as the 16-time world champion in the future.
Graves said, “You wanted to be on the Cena tour, much like now you wanna be on the Roman Reigns tour because Roman Reigns is box office, and maybe Roman can surpass that [Cena’s superstardom]. Roman’s still got a few years left. Roman’s still firing on all cylinders at the top of his game. Roman could be the guy who knocks Cena out of that spot. I don’t know if it’s gonna happen.”
Roman Reigns and John Cena: Who would be the bigger GOAT?
At No Mercy 2017 and SummerSlam 2021, Reigns overcame Cena in two passing-of-the-torch moments. In-ring scenes featuring both fighters cutting vicious promos on each other made the rivalry legendary.
Due to his WWE notoriety and success as an actor outside of wrestling, John Cena has become a household name in recent years. When non-wrestling fans learn that Corey Graves works for WWE, he is usually asked the same question, which he finds humorous.
“To this day, when I meet somebody who is not familiar with me or meet somebody new and they ask, ‘What do you do for a living?’” Graves continued. “‘Oh, I work for WWE. I’m an announcer on Monday Night RAW.’ The first question they ask, ‘Do you know John Cena?’ 99 percent of the time, because that’s the pop culture point of reference to our world, is that guy.”
Cena will return to WWE on RAW on June 27 to commemorate his 20th anniversary as a member of the main roster. Since losing to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam last year, he has not appeared in a televised bout.
